College Internships at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center

Thank you for inquiring about internships at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Our internships are not paid; you will have to provide your own room and board if your project is accepted.

COLLEGE INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE

· Summer:  Sea Life Education Center Interpretive Guide - guide our visitors through the Center and explain our displays, our purpose and our views on marine mammal and sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation. This internship is suitable for Communications majors.

Summer:  Museum Assistant/Stranding Intern-  This person would assist in our museum giving tours and explaining our mission. If a stranding occurs, this individual would be on call to join our technicians to assist the stranded animal.  This individual will learn about necropsies and animal care, as well as gain valuable insight into education and outreach.

Winter: This internship would start at the beginning of our seal season (usually mid November) and would work until the end of seal season (usually beginning of June).  This intern would work at least 12 hours a week (same time each week).  He or she would help with seal care and possibly help on releases.

All college students are welcome to apply for these internships.  If you wish to obtain college credit for this internship you must do the following:

1.      Get a professor from your college program to back you with your project.
2. Write a project proposal including a subject/topic of study and outline, to be signed by your sponsoring professor. The topic of study is up to you. Some recommended projects are outlined below.
3. Submit written proposal to Mr. Robert Schoelkopf, Director, by mail or email and then call one week to ten days later for comments and further arrangements on the project. ( PO Box 773 , Brigantine , NJ 08203 ).
