Thank you for inquiring about internships at the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Our internships are not paid; you will have to provide your own room and board if your project is accepted. All interns must be 18yrs old or older.

Summer: Sea Life Education Center Interpretive Guide

- Guide our visitors through the Center and explain our displays, our purpose and our views on marine mammal and sea turtle rescue and rehabilitation. Summer: Museum Assistant/Education Intern

- This person would assist in our museum giving tours and explaining our mission. There main job will be to assist with beach seining and field programs designed for children. Spring: Field Stranding Technicians Assistant

This internship involves assisting our Field Stranding Technicians with the rescue and rehabilitation of stranded seals and sea turtles in New Jersey.

Duties Include: Cleaning and maintenance of all animal holding areas, preparing for and performing daily feedings, and assisting the Field Stranding Technicians in stranding response, medical procedures, and releases.

Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and be in good physical condition, as well as be able to lift 40 lbs. The Spring internship runs from February through June, and interns must be available for at least two 4 hour shifts per week. The internship is unpaid; however students may apply with their college/university to receive college credit. No lodging is provided, and interns must have their own transportation. Experience is not required, and both undergraduates and recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

Outreach Programs

Outreach ProgramsThe Marine Mammal Stranding Center now offers educational programs delivered right to your classroom!  Through hands-on, interactive presentations, your students will learn about:

  • The mysterious lives of marine mammals and sea turtles

  • The problems facing not only these creatures, but also their marine environment as a whole

  • The role the MMSC plays to overcome these problems

  • What each student can do to help


NEW! We now have the ability to perform a delayed-feed through our cameras to
show any in-house animals at our facility, and take a virtual tour through our center.

All programs include a Power Point presentation and animal artifacts.

Summer Programs

SEININGSeining: Join our staff at a beach location to learn about fish and other sea life in our bays and oceans. Join in as we net fish using a seine net, study them briefly, and then return them to the water. Some fish will be taken to our outdoor observation tank where they spend the summer, and are returned to the bay in the fall. Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to get wet! (all ages)

pricing123Beach Walk: Take a relaxing stroll along the beach while learning about the plants and animals that make their homes along our shores. (all ages)

Terrapin Day: Meet the turtles that walk across our island to lay their eggs every summer. You will see full-grown and tiny hatchling turtles that are being raised to give them a “head start”. (all ages)

Marine Mammal Stranding Center- Special Camp Programs (Registration required)

DOLPHIN CAMP:(ages 8 & up) This is one of our most popular programs! Take part in an adventure as you learn about dolphins and why they strand, then participate in a hands-on mock dolphin stranding on the beach. Be ready to get wet!

MOCK STRANDING-SEA TURTLES: (ages 7 & up) Become a stranding technician for the day while you learn all about sea turtles and the reasons they strand. Learn how to help a stranded sea turtle, Make observations, take measurements and learn how to help a stranded sea turtle. Fee: $15 Mock stranding.
